Land Surveying

Land Surveyors are measurement specialists who turn reality into maps used by Engineers, Architects, Planners, Designers and other professionals to plan projects.

Here are some panoramic images of Veteran’s Field.

Here is a map of Veteran’s Field used by Engineers to design the new bleachers.

What do Land Surveyors locate?

  • Planimetrics - all the physical features you can see. Roads, buildings, trees, fences, patios, decks, landscaping, etc.

  • Topographics - the elevations of the ground. These are represented by lines called Contours.

  • Utilities - the as-built locations of utilities are critical for many Engineering projects.

  • Boundaries - The land is divided into roads and lots. A surveyor’s most important function is to sort out where the dividing lines are.

What else do Land Surveyors do?

  • Staking - Marking out Engineered improvements or sharks.

  • Engineering - Most Land Surveyors are involved with Engineering and Design.

  • GIS & Cartography - Being able to work with maps of large areas is important for even the smallest of projects.

What do Land Surveyors need to know?

  • Mathematics - measurements require Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, Probability and Algebra.

  • Science - Geology, Biology and Physics are used in conjunction with measurements.

  • Engineering - At a minimum, to stake out improvements requires knowledge of the engineering behind those improvements.

  • Law - There are many legal aspects especially with Boundaries.

  • History - The historical locations of things are as important as the current location of things.

  • Computers - The use of computers within the field is ever increasing.

Engineering Support

Civil, Highway, Environmental, Sanitary, Structural Engineers all need some data from Land Surveyors.
This video is of the Little Beach Area in Chatham. It is low land that is flooded during winter storms.

The data from a survey here can be used to design flood resistant homes, new roadways that will serve the area better during a flood, septic systems that provide adequate filtration and coastal projects to project the homes. Since this information was acquired, they have built a dune to stop the floods.

LASERS.

  • Star wars guns (pew pew pew) - We are not quite there, might need some engineers.

  • Cutting Tools

  • Visible Lasers

  • Robot and car sensors

  • Measurement - We can map from the back of the vehicle.

Point Clouds - The laser scan data is converted into a collection of points. Similar files can be made from a group of photographs. These are big files that are tough to work with. It takes skill, training and practice to extract the data into a format used by Engineers.

Now for a Laser Dance Party!
