Complete User Guide
Introduction
Welcome to the East-South-East Interactive Map Viewer! This powerful tool gives you access to a rich collection of property and environmental data. This guide will walk you through every feature, from basic navigation to creating professional, multi-page printouts.
Part 1: Basic Map Interaction
Navigating the Map
- Pan (Move): Click and drag your mouse to move the map in any direction.
- Zoom: Use your mouse's scroll wheel to zoom in and out. You can also use the + and - buttons in the top-right corner of the map.
Searching for an Address
The search bar at the top of the toolkit allows you to quickly jump to a specific location.
- Action: Type a property address into the search bar and press

. - Result: The map will automatically center on that address and drop a pin.
Part 2: The Layer Menu
The menu on the left side of the screen lists all the available data layers you can view on the map.
Toggling Layers
- Action: Simply click on a layer name in the menu to turn it on or off.
- Result: When a layer is active, its button will be highlighted in blue, and the data will appear on the map. Click it again to hide it.
Understanding the Layers
Each button corresponds to a different set of data:
- Satellite: Toggles a high-resolution satellite image of the area.
- Parcels: Shows property boundary lines.
- LIDAR Contours: Displays detailed 2-foot elevation lines.
- AGIS: Shows the coverage areas of historic aerial photographs.
- Historic: Outlines designated historic districts.
- Floodplain: Shows FEMA flood zones (e.g., AE, VE, X).
- ACEC: Displays Areas of Critical Environmental Concern.
- DEP Wetland: Shows state-delineated wetland areas.
- Endangered Species: Outlines habitats for rare and endangered species.
- Zone II: Shows Wellhead Protection Areas.
- Soils: Displays different soil types as classified by the NRCS.
Part 3: The Toolkit
The toolkit on the right contains a suite of powerful tools for interacting with the map data.
1. Markers: Pinpointing a Location
Markers allow you to set a specific point of interest on the map.
- Drop a Pin: Click the Point button (map pin icon), then click anywhere on the map.
- Center on Pin: If you've panned away, click the Center Point button (pin with a target) to immediately re-center the map on your pin.
- Remove Pin: Click the Point Off button (pin with an 'X') to remove the marker from the map.
2. Measure Tool: Calculating Distances
This tool lets you measure distances between multiple points.
- Activate: Click the Measure button (ruler icon). Your cursor will become a crosshair.
- Measure: Click on the map to drop points (A, B, C, etc.). The distance between each point will be displayed in the Distance Display box.
- Finalize: Click the Measure button again to complete the measurement. The total distance will be calculated and displayed.
- Clear: Click the Clear button (ruler with a cancel icon) to remove all measurements.
3. Identify Tool: Getting Feature Information
The Identify tool provides a summary of all active data layers at a single point.
- Activate: Click the Identify button (info 'i' icon). Your cursor will turn into a question mark.
- Click: Click on any point on the map.
- Result: A box will appear listing all the features from your visible layers at that exact spot (e.g., Parcel ID, Flood Zone, Soil Type).
4. Print Area Overlay
This tool helps you visualize the exact area that will be captured in a printout.
- Action: Click the Print Area button (square icon).
- Result: A dashed red box will appear on the map, representing an 8x8 inch print area at the current scale. The scale is automatically calculated and displayed in the Scale Box. This is a great way to frame your map before printing.
5. Legend
The legend helps you understand the symbols and colors on the map.
- Action: Click the Legend button.
- Result: A dynamic legend will appear. It intelligently updates to show you only the symbols for the layers that are currently visible on your screen.
6. Bookmarks: Saving and Loading Map Views
You can save your current map view—including the center point, zoom level, and active layers—to use later.
- Open Menu: Click the Bookmark button (ribbon icon).
- Save a View: Type a name for your view in the input box and click "Save Current View."
- Load a View: Simply click on the name of a previously saved bookmark to instantly return to that view.
7. Scale Tool
This tool allows you to view and set a precise engineering scale for your map.
- Activate: Click the Zoom to Scale button.
- Result: A new panel will appear showing the current map scale (e.g., 1" = 257 feet).
- Set a Scale: You can type a number (like 100) into the input box and click Submit to have the map automatically zoom to that scale (e.g., 1" = 100'). You can also choose a preset from the dropdown menu.
9. Standard Print
This creates a quick, single-page printout of your current map view.
- Action: Click the Print button (printer icon).
- Result: A new tab will open with a formatted print-ready page, including the map, legend, and scale bar.
10. Custom Print
This is the most powerful printing tool, designed for creating professional, multi-page reports.
- Set Your Map's Center Point: First, use the Point tool to drop a pin on your area of interest. This will be the center for all pages.
- Open the Menu: Click the Custom Print button (multi-page document icon).
- Fill Out the Form:
- Company Information: Enter your details. Check the "Save" box to have your browser remember them.
- Client Information: Enter the client name and property address for the project.
- Configure Map Settings:
- Print Preset: Choose a map set. "Conservation" is for environmental reviews, and "Test Hole" is for site work and soil analysis.
- Map Scale: Enter a scale (e.g., 100 for 1"=100') or choose a preset from the dropdown.
- Generate Your Printout: Click Submit. A new tab will open, generating a professional, multi-page PDF with your branding, a dynamic legend for each page, and consistent scaling.
