Snoopy - The mobile mapper solution was big for what we needed. We were a little early adopting the little mobile mapper. It required fiddling - adjusting the boresights for every scan. Setting and picking out control points was tedious. I built wooden templates for checkerboards and chevrons. QAQC would sometimes lead to reprocessing or cloud adjustments. Getting to the good data was work.
Faro X330 - The tripod mounted system would take time. I looked into a new tripod system and those are so much faster now. The old one needed time in the office to find the targets, run the registration, colorize, and export the data. I would train technicians and the cadence was funny: Start this task and walk away, then do the next task and walk away, repeat and be sure to save often.
Drone - We use Pix4d for photogrammerty and the processing is faster than the Snoopy and the X330, but the clouds are incomplete.
In 2022 I searched for a solution.
Another tripod system? Even though they are faster, they still have limitations.
LiDAR on a drone? We have these birds of prey who have taken out a couple of DJI P4Ps. I am not excited about dangling the investment up there.
Mobile Mapper? Too much for our needs.
SLAM - All signs pointed to this solution for our needs.
